Supervising Instruction Week 3 Clinical Supervision

Morris Cogan developed an eight cycle for clinical supervision.

Clinical Supervision Cycle 1 – establish teacher-supervisor relationship and a level of trust Cycle 2 – intense planning with the teacher, this includes lessons, units, lectures Cycle 3 – plan strategy for classroom observation, both the teacher and supervisor. Cycle 4 – classroom observation (entire lesson, sermon, class or subject time). Cycle 5 – analyze teaching and learning process. This is an intense and careful analysis. Cycle 6 – plan conference Cycle 7 – conference time Cycle 8 – recommencement of planning

Clinical Supervision Quick Study: Pre-performance Cycle 1-3 The teacher and the supervisor/administrator are both developing their trust relationship and learning more about one another. This is the planning stage of their process. No actual observation has been performed so then this would the pre-performance stage.

Clinical Supervision Quick Study: Performance Cycle 4-5 is the point at which the actual observation begins. The teacher and supervisor are aware of what will be observed, the basic assessment process and how all of this will happen. Now it is all unfolding in a professional and Christ like manner.

Clinical Supervision Quick Study: Post-Performance Cycle 6-8 The administrator and the teacher review the performance/observation. Areas of strength and improvement are mention and ideally a performance improvement plan should be created together.

Clinical Supervision Possible Issues in Clinical Supervision 1.This can become a routine, if used continually, and not provide the skills assessment that it should. 2.Some teachers will repeatedly receive the same score and not show improvement. 3.This can be too intense for some teachers, if used continually for the same teachers. 4.Teachers will know what to expect and perform well only for that particular observation. 5.This form of observation is not inclusive and can only provide guidance to a certain extent.

Quick Quiz 1.What are the eight cycles of clinical supervision? 2.What are the three quick divisions for the eight cycles? 3.Name some issues with clinical supervision. 4. The eight cycles to clinical supervision were created by whom? 5. What do you think about clinical supervision? Is it beneficial? Would you use it for administrative purposes?
