Performance Based Assessments Making A Plan Hannah Chaney Carmen Coleman

The Case of the Hungry Hound  “PBAT is a great experience in which the skills we take away and display are much superior to the skills we show in other forms of testing including standardized. We are challenged in ways that will help us gain things vital to success in real life. Instead of just bubbling in answers, we are persevering and exercising creativity.” C.H. (current 8 th grader, BMS)

Decisions….Decisions…  Who will we assess?  When will we assess?  What rooms will we use?  Who will serve as panelists/scorers?  Who will invite them?  Who will train them?

Choosing a FORMAT… Round Tables Individual defenses What’s the difference? Which one is best for us?

Decisions….  Content and Skills  Components to assess (see examples from Bate)  How will the assessment be scored (choosing/designing rubrics)  Preparing Students  QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do we have to invent something new, or can we use something that ALREADY works???

How do students feel about PBATS  “ PBATS are NOT easy the first time,” says E.C. “…but the more we practiced the more we knew what we were suppose to do.” (current 7 th grader, BMS)  “I didn’t really like PBATs at first because I get really nervous. I thought the PBAT was going to be hard,” said C.W. “Now, I think PBATs are very helpful, because I think speaking in front of people is educational and will help people learn to talk and explain real life problems. Doing the PBAT prepares you for job interviews and important speeches.” (current 8 th grader, BMS)  “PBATS helped me learn to work in a group, if we hadn’t done PBATS I would still be shy…When we started to present I was very stressed and nervous, but as I presented I began to calm down. I did very well on my project.” I.F. (current 7 th grader, BMS)

WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THIS DATA? SUGGESTION: *Data Folders that triangulate student performance on PBATs, MAP, and Explorer data. *Use these to establish mentor groups. *Great for parent/teacher/student communication. How could this work for you?
