1 Equitable Recruitment: A Recruitment Process for Multiple Academy Schools February 13 and 14, 2012 Angie Kania Coordinator, AOIT Lighthouse Academy Hoover High School, San Diego akania@sandi.net

2 Why necessary? Hoover has 5 academies/SLC’s competing for 9 th grade students Some academies accused of “skimming off the top” Students and parents needed to be presented with clear choices Coordination with counseling staff, articulation processes and master scheduling personnel

3 Schedule a date on master calendar for all academy presentations-- target grade 9 classrooms Create a recruitment schedule to visit all 9 th Grade ELA classes; Remind 9 th grade teachers of classroom presentations Train academy students to present Create an Interest Form with all academies listed—after academy presentations 9th grade students will mark 1st, 2nd, 3rd for academy participation Collect Interest FormsInterest Forms from all 9 th grade students Conduct recruitment presentations in 9 th grade ELA Classes Keep all original Interest Forms in a binder for all academy coordinators to reference Give each academy coordinator copies of Interest Forms marked “First Choice” for their academy Academy director meets with 9 th grade students who marked academy as first choice, interviews and gives students academy application Five Stages of Equitable Recruitment 1 2 3

4 Academy coordinator generates a master list master list of all 9 th grade students admitted to their academy All coordinators meet to review recruitment lists; make adjustments and balance if necessary During articulation, counselors use master list of 9 th graders to ensure each student is enrolled in the correct academy and courses. Generate a master list of 9 thmaster list of 9 th grade students and what academy they have joined. Copies to all counselors, coordinators and VP- master schedule New student/parent Orientation June, August or September Acceptance letters out to 9 th grade students Stages of Equitable Recruitment Continued 4 5

5 Make sure recruitment process fits into the School’s Master Calendar and Articulation Schedule of the Counseling Office Start Now for Next Year: work closely with VP of master scheduling to ensure academy courses and teachers are correct Attend the Master Calendar meeting(s) to ensure academy recruitment is scheduled for Jan. or Feb. By August coordinators confirm students are enrolled in proper courses Sept. or Oct: Begin working closely with counseling office to coordinate new cycle of recruitment Hold monthly academy coordinator meetings to determine your school’s recruitment process and academy trouble-shooting Invite counselors to ensure recruitment process fits with their articulation schedule Invite VP who does master scheduling Invite Principal Invite all academy coordinators Develop a timeline
