Studying A MUST for a successful student

Sheldon is studying

Study Skills Sitting and reading a book is a difficult way to study. Many people become bored, sleepy, or distracted and they get little to nothing accomplished. There has got to be a better way!

Music and Studying It may be more pleasant to study with the Beatles or Izzy Azalea keeping you company, and plenty has been written about how listening to music stimulates different parts of the brain. But if your favorite tunes wake up your senses and make homework less difficult, do they also impede your ability to learn? music stimulates different parts of the brain It really depends on the individual. Some students can study effectively with music playing, while others are distracted by any outside stimulus. According to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, students who studied with music playing had lower average tests scores than those who didn’t. But the institute also found that the scores varied depending on whether the student routinely played music while studying and by the type of music played. students who studied with music playing

The Bottom line... If you find listening to music helps you and you are successful with your study results, go for it!

Good Study Tips... Students with better study methods and strategies score higher on their exams. ●It is best to review the material right after class when it's still fresh in your memory. ●Don't try to do all your studying the night before the test. Instead space out your studying, review class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time. ●Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant material. ●Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed; it is very tempting to just lie down and take a nap).

More Good Study Tips... ●Start out by studying the most important information. ●Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle. ●Test yourself or have someone test you on the material to find out what your weak and strong areas are. You can use the review questions at the end of each chapter, practice tests that the teacher may give out or other pertinent materials. ●Don't study later than the time you usually go to sleep, you may fall asleep or be tempted to go to sleep, instead try studying in the afternoon or early evening. If you are a morning person try studying in the morning.

Study Guides are your Friends... IF a teacher provides you with a study guide USE IT!!! Usually it helps narrow down the information to the important concepts to know. If you are given a couple of essay questions that COULD be on the test, practice answering all of them. It will help you be prepared to answer them on the test.

Study SessionsSESSIONS How do you study? What are you supposed to do? Study has 3 parts Organising subject matter efficiently Getting ongoing day to day work and assignments done Researching and revising work for exams

Don’t make study sessions too long Drink some water before you start Break tasks down into smaller manageable ones Do daily summaries of work covered in class in your own words under Main Points Set a task to achieve for each session

Record your plan of attack for each session Practise skills learned by doing problems, exercises and essays Aim to build a clear understanding by connecting areas of knowledge These sessions are the backbone of your Study Programme ‘ Some succeed because they are destined to: most succeed because they are determined to.’

PRIORITISING When do you study? How often? What about the other things you do? Write down : The fixed things that you have to do Time you have no control over – the ‘musts’ Activities where you have a choice of the ‘options’

PRIORITISE your OPTIONS What are your favourites? You can’t do everything To achieve your goals, sacrifices have to be made Avoid time wasters – make a list of the main ones Reward yourself for working well and achieving short term goals To perform at your best requires fulfilling and stimulating leisure/relaxation time You are responsible for the organisation of your time and lifestyle ‘The first step is the most difficult part of the journey’

PRIORITISING STUDY Setting yourself a specific task to achieve each night is a necessary skill Too often you tend to ‘let it happen’ and don’t plan ahead Procrastination is an obstacle to your goals Each morning or each night before, make a list of study tasks in order of priority for the following night
