2 RAYON Some major rayon fiber uses include apparel (e.g. Aloha shirts, blouses, dresses, jackets, linings, scarves, suits, neckties, hats, socks), the filling in Zippo lighters, furnishings (e.g. bedspreads, bedsheets, blankets, window treatments, upholstery, slipcovers), industrial uses (e.g. medical surgery products, non-woven products, tire cord), and other uses (e.g. yarn, feminine hygiene products, diapers, towels). [3, in 1894, English chemist Charles Frederick Cross, and his collaborators Edward John Bevan, and Clayton Beadle patented their artificial silk, which they named "viscose", because the reaction product of carbon disulfide and cellulose in basic conditions gave a highly viscous solution of xanthate. The first commercial viscose rayon was produced by the UK company Courtaulds Fibers in 1905. ] Rayon is a major feedstock in the production of carbon fiberapparelAloha shirtsblousesdresses jacketsliningsscarvessuitsnecktieshatssocksZippolightersbedspreadsbedsheetsblanketswindow treatments upholsteryslipcoversmedicalsurgerytireyarnfeminine hygiene diaperstowels [3Charles Frederick CrossEdward John BevanClayton Beadleviscosecarbon disulfidecellulosexanthateCourtaulds ]carbon fiber Some major rayon fiber uses include apparel (e.g. Aloha shirts, blouses, dresses, jackets, linings, scarves, suits, neckties, hats, socks), the filling in Zippo lighters, furnishings (e.g. bedspreads, bedsheets, blankets, window treatments, upholstery, slipcovers), industrial uses (e.g. medical surgery products, non-woven products, tire cord), and other uses (e.g. yarn, feminine hygiene products, diapers, towels). 5 Cellulose: Production begins with processed cellulose Pressing: Cellulose is dissolved in caustic soda and solution is pressed between rollers to remove excess liquid Aging: The pressed sheets are aged through exposure to oxygen Ripening: The viscose(viscose is a solution of cellulose xanthate made by treating a cellulose compound with sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide) is set to stand for a period of time, allowing it to ripen Filtering: After ripening, the viscose is filtered to remove any undissolved particles Extruding: The viscose solution is extruded through a spinneret, which resembles a shower head with many small holes Acid Bath: As the viscose exits the spinneret, it lands in a bath of sulphuric acid, resulting in the formation of rayon filaments Drawing: The rayon filaments are stretched, known as drawing, to straighten out the fibers Washing: The fibers are then washed to remove any residual chemicals Cutting: If filament fibers are desired the process ends here. The filaments are cut down when producing staple fibers. ARUSHI MITTAL,ROLL NO.-10,8-D

6 It is used in textile industry for making textiles. Rayon is used for making tyre cords. It is also used for making carpets and surgical dressings Rayon is used for making cloths like Aloha shirts, blouses, dresses, jackets, lingerie, linings, scarves, suits, neckties, hats and socks, the filling in Zippo lighter etc. It is used for Furnishings like bedspread, bed sheet, blankets, window treatment, slipcovers etc. It is even used for industrial uses like medical surgery products, non woven products etc. ARUSHI GARG, CLASS --VIII – D, ROLL NO. - 9

10 Consumers should be aware of several cautions in relation to proper use and care of fabrics made from rayon fiber. Regular or viscose rayon has low wet strength, resulting in loss of stability or the tendency to shrink or stretch easily when wet. In some instances, polynosic or HWM rayons may be "low labeled." This means that manufacturers have recommended dry cleaning when hand washing or machine washing would be satisfactory. There is a finish that can be applied to make viscose rayon fabrics washable and limit shrinkage to 3 percent. It is formaldehyde-free and will not affect the hand, width, or length of treated fabrics. Because viscose rayon is less stable when wet, uneven hemlines may occur in full bias skirts or dresses made from rayon crepe fabrics. MADE BY- DIPESH NARANG VIII-D 12
