5 THE CODE OF HAMMURABI 1792-1750 BCE -Earliest-know set of written laws. - King of Baylon / Iraq - 300 codified laws - Male dominated / anti-slave - Based on retribution - Eye for an eye Also based on restitution - Payment for wrong doing “BCE vs. BC”

11  William the Conqueror established first set of laws in Britain since Romans (1066)  Divine Right – Monarch = absolute power from God himself.(Kings = above the law)  Kings then established the feudal land holding system.  No rule of evidence – Nobles = judges. 12 MAGNA CARTA The travelling assizes began to erode the power of the King, & King John would eventually sign the Magna Carta. This would be the end of the Divine Right.
