2015-2016 MESA CHALLENGES
2
Students work in teams to apply computer science coding and programming skills to undergo scripted challenges in a charades style competition. Teams will break into 2 groups: ‘coders” and “computers”; coders will be given scripted coding challenges to create and program the computers, computers must successfully complete the matched action for a judge; those that are successful will move on. STATION 1: SYNTAX CHARADES

STATION 1: SYNTAX CHARADES Some places to visit in order to learn code: https://code.org/ https://scratch.mit.edu/ https://turtleacademy.com/ http://www.alice.org/index.php http://girlswhocode.com/
5
STATION 2: ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER EXPLORATION Students use team investigation to understand and perform related tasks and solve real world problems in various fields of Land Management, Natural Resources and Ecology at 3-4 career stations.

STATION 2: ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER EXPLORATION Why are environmental scientists important? Human Impact on the Environment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eTCZ9L834s Pollution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdDSRRCKMiI

STATION 2: ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER EXPLORATION Student teams move among stations where student teams use career keywords and related vocabulary creatively, solve problems, or experience a physical challenge related to different career needs; Correct answers or timed actions score points Examples: water chemistry testing, assembling a radio telemetry unit, etc. Link to: salary and educational background.

STATION 2: ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER EXPLORATION Career Examples: Hydrologist Climate Change Analyst Wildlife Biologist Aquaculture Manager Park RangerAquaculture Manager Environmental EngineerGeographer Soil Scientist Sustainability Specialist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kaeyr5-O2eU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kaeyr5-O2eU (Conservation Biology)

STATION 2: ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER EXPLORATION Want to explore environmental careers? 1. Go to Science Buddies http://www.sciencebuddies.org/http://www.sciencebuddies.org/ Select Science Careers Tab. Fill out Science Buddies worksheet (or take your own notes) on a variety of careers. (p. 10 of MESA Day Handbook). http://www.nmmesa.org/wp-content/uploads/MESA-Day-2016-Handbook-FINAL.pdf 2. Do web searches on various careers.
10
Students work in groups to compare and contrast products based on environmentally literate citizenry. Products are categorized by three inputs: 1)social = perceived benefit to people and/or the environment 2)economic = cost and 3)environmental = biodegradability, recyclability, weight of waste Teams move from station to station to select a best practices ‘shopping cart’ based on pros and cons of each item, items are awarded different point values based on the 3 factors noted to the left Examples: Clorox vs. Meyers© cleaners fresh fruit vs. canned fruit STATION 3: SUSTAINABILITY SUPERMARKET
