God’s Grace Knows Suffering! Lesson 4

14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. A ND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. Lesson 4

I Peter 4:1,2 1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. Lesson 4

Why Do We Suffer? Because Jesus suffered ”since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose” (4:1) Because we must be free “because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.” (4:2) Because others are still in darkness “They are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses”... (4:4) Lesson 4

How Should We Respond? Keep serving Jesus “as each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another.” (4:10) Rejoice that you can share in His sufferings “But to the degree that you share the suffering of Christ, keep on rejoicing” (4:13) Praise Jesus “if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not be ashamed, but is to glorify God, in this name” (4:16) Lesson 4

5 Biblical Axioms Concerning Suffering 1. God’s plan includes suffering. From that time Jesus Christ began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Matt 16:21 Lesson 4

5 Biblical Axioms Concerning Suffering 2. Suffering is not always the result of sin. John 9:2,3 It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was in order that the works of God might be displayed in him. Lesson 4

5 Biblical Axioms Concerning Suffering 3. Through suffering we identify with Christ. Hebrews 2:18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. Lesson 4

5 Biblical Axioms Concerning Suffering 4. Suffering is an opportunity. Hebrews 5:8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. Lesson 4

5 Biblical Axioms Concerning Suffering 5. What is true, remains true even during suffering. James 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowingthat the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
