Sir Francis

Who Is He? (Sara) -Born on January 22 1561 in London, England. -Famous philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist, and author. -Served as an Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. -Was a philosophical advocate and forefather of the scientific method during the scientific revolution. -Was given the name “Father of Empiricism” (Theory that knowledge primarily comes from one’s senses).

Works Sir Francis Bacon had a collection of many different types of work he had written, including... -Scientific works -Religious and literary works -Judicial works Alongside these he has had several debates about these subjects

Summary of The Novum Organum (Jackie) - Francis Bacon’s The Novum Organum, published in 1620, outlined his attempt to introduce a new philosophical shape to the new scientific method during the scientific revolution - intro to a new lens - Within The Novum Organum he introduced and outlined The Baconian Method -Criticising our current scientific methods being inaccurate (b/c following notions and not actual facts -Believed that his method was the better way out because it begins with nature and not words that were considered false notions -Proposed to establish progressive stages of being certain. The evidence helped and guarded by a certain process of being correct. Essentially, corrections should be made to be accurate XI: “As the sciences which we now have do not help us in finding out new works, so neither does the logic which we now have help us in finding out new sciences.” - (Organum,

Historical Context ● Francis Bacon offered the world ideas from the perspective of an Englishman during the Renaissance. (A time when Italy was the hub of European innovation) ● Seeing as Bacon lived during a time of philosophical and scientific rebirth, his written works mainly consisted of concepts that could be applied to intellectual activities.

Historical Context Continued ● His work “Novum Organum” offered criticisms of scientific method in his time. ● For example, he did not agree with the use of syllogisms to draw conclusions because they are made up of words. To him, words were simply notions and if scientific conclusions were based on notions then they would not be very credible.

What is it’s Purpose? (Jackie) ● Philosopher who was interested in natural philosophy and was determined to change the surface of natural philosophy ● Offered a new idea that was illustrated through his work Novum Organum that could potentially change mankind ● Whether or not anything can be completely known - was to be resolved not by arguing, but by trying to exercise a new idea into philosophy. Trusting entirely to the force of their understanding, applied no rule, followed no order, but made everything take a 360 degree turn upon to hard thinking and perpetual working and exercising of the mind to the point of acceptance. (science and logic > faith)

It’s Impact on Human History (Sara) ● With the deterioration of the church’s grasp on society Bacon introduced his theory of logic requiring evidence, reshaping the way society perceives everything. The idea of an individual not being credible without proof is a mindset within every field of work/social group in modern day. ● Was a contributor during the scientific revolution, assisting in creating the beliefs of science and logic over faith. ● His beliefs of removing any prejudices, collecting evidence in an organized fashion and reviewing research to come to a conclusion are constantly used today.
