2 Overview The Wadden Sea is a sub- section of the North Sea, covering the northern sea shore of Germany and the Netherlands. The waters of the Wadden Sea are of the Arctic Ocean. 3 Reasons for Inclusion The Wadden Sea fulfils three of the ten criteria used to select UN World Heritage Sites: viii. To record a major stage in Earth’s history; ix. To represent an ongoing development of life on Earth; x. To contain significant natural habitats and exhibit biological diversity. 5 Flora and Fauna Every nature lover owes it to themselves to experience the over five thousand species of birds, shellfish, mammals, plants, and fish that can be found in and around the Wadden Sea’s many beaches, flats, grasslands, and waters.
