CERTAINTY OF OUR SALVATION ? “Once saved always saved” > “Saved and Lost” > Can we really be certain of our eternal security?

Certainty of our Salvation2 Romans 8: 28-39 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who a 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.re the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Certainty of our Salvation3 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Certainty of our Salvation4 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Certainty of our Salvation5 Once saved, always saved A simple formula but Scripture speaks of salvation in three ways: we have been saved (past)- Romans 8:24, Ephesians 2:5 we are being saved (present)- 1 Corinthians. 1:18, 2 Cor. 2:15-16 we shall be saved (future)- Romans 5:9-10, Philippians 1:27-28

Certainty of our Salvation6 Is there a contradiction? Assurance: John 3:36, John 6:37, 1 Corinthians 1:8, 2 Timothy 4:18 Warnings-their relevance: Matthew 24:13, 1 Corinthians 15:2, 2 Corinthians13:5 Scripture must be read in context, it never contradicts itself

Certainty of our Salvation7 Salvation by God or man? Our salvation is by God’s sovereign grace: We are divinely elected It is by the sacrifice of God’s Son He justifies us freely He seals us by His Spirit He preserves us

Certainty of our Salvation8 Certainty of salvation - past Christ’s work can never be undone: Romans 6:10; Hebrews 9:12, 26; 10:10, 1 Peter 3:18 Faith unites us with Christ: Romans 5:1-2; 8:1, Ephesians 1:13 We have assurance of eternal life: John 5:24

Certainty of our Salvation9 Certainty of salvation - present Christ work for us continues : Romans 8:34- 35; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1 Evidence of God’s work in our lives: –when tempted: 1 Corinthians 10:13 –changed attitude to sin: 1 John 3:9 –love of fellow Christians: 1 John 3:14 Assurance of eternal life: 1 John 5:13

Certainty of our Salvation10 Certainty of salvation - future Christ’s work will be completed: John 6:39; 10:27-30; 2 Timothy 1:12 Christ can and will finish what he started: Philippians 1:4-6; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 Heaven and believers are kept for each other: 1 Peter 1:3-5 Assurance of eternal life: John 6:40

Certainty of our Salvation11 Saved and lost - warning Texts: Hebrews 6:4-8; 10:26-31 The context –Christians converted from Judaism –“no sacrifice for sin left” Profession or Possession? The writer is not here speaking of true believers. Hebrews 6:9-12; 10:32-39

Certainty of our Salvation12 “Saved and lost” - why recorded Reminder that not all professors are real: Matthew 7:15-23; 1 John 2:19 Encouragement for confidence and holy living: Philippians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:5-11 Warning not to presume on the grace of God: Colossians 1:21-23, Hebrews 2:1-3
