1 International Development Task Force (Study report ) Reda Ammar, CSE John Enderle, BME Alpay Pamir, CMBE M. Gebremichael, CEEQuing Zhu, ECE Shiva Kotha, ME Marty Wood, Deanery

2 General goal: School of Engineering seeks to prepare its graduates to be cognizant of different cultures, expand foreign language skills, and aware of global issues. Committee Approach: Survey different methods of international development that achieve the general goal. Select methods that a) are consistent with UConn academic plan b) achieve enhanced int’l reputation

3 Method#1: Recruiting International Students to SoE Undergraduate students Graduate students SoE has no effort done previously in this area. UConn has a goal to recruit 100 international students per year. Recruit high performing students with scholarships SoE has a number of successful programs and MOUs for recruiting funded graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

4 Method #2: Educational Experience Through Study Abroad Direct Enrollment Model Euro Tech, BME program National University of Singapore (existing) University of Queensland (forthcoming) Study Abroad Organizations The Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E³) Members include: University of Hong Kong, Handong Global University, University of Leeds, Tohoku University

5 Method #3: Research Partnerships Today, 20% of the world publications are co- authored internationally. Innovation is occurring rapidly around the world Scientific research has become an integral part of economic and innovation policy Funding from NSF (including PIRE and IREE), HED, MEPI,… Currently, int’l collaboration is based on individual relationships. It needs to grow and to become more programmatic. Collaborate with research centers abroad

6 Method #4: Educational Partnerships (Joint degree or Dual degree) Undergraduate Programs Limited Supervision Supervision with two years of study at Uconn Gaining dual degree Graduate Programs 29% of USA universities established one or more partnership programs with foreign institutes School of Education model for MS degree On-line offering

7 Method #5: International Engineering Training and Certificate Programs Reputation: becoming known internationally With its regional partners, UConn-SoE can offer short-term workshops designed to enhance the knowledge and abilities of participants in emerging fields Enhance the educational and research interactions with our partners abroad Virtual training centers

8 What Next? Set priority for different programs Map different methods to our programs Define and assess outcomes Develop infrastructures needed (video conference capabilities, for example) Incentives for faculty involved in international program development
