2 S HOW M E W HAT Y OU “M IGHT ” K NOW On a sheet of paper, write the word “Buddhism” going down as for an acrostic. Ex: B U D H I S M Now for each letter, write the words that you think of when you think of Buddhism and fit them into your acrostic. Oh, did I mention that the words have to start with each letter?

6 B ASICS OF B UDDHISM Buddhism originated in India Spread rapidly Fourth largest religion in the world today.

7 W HERE WAS B UDDHISM FOUNDED ? Began in India, spread throughout Asia

8 B ASICS OF B UDDHISM Siddhartha Gautama The “Buddha” or “the enlightened one” Traveled all over India to share his “enlightenment” with other people Developed a group of followers devoted to his teachings about a “way of life” to “enlightenment”.

9 FOUNDER: Buddha “The Enlightened One” Also know as Siddhartha Gautama

10 W HO WAS THE B UDDHA ? Born Siddhartha Gautama – of noble caste in India, 563 B.C.E. Raised in great luxury to be a king Empathy for the suffering of others; at age 29 rejected the life of luxury to seek enlightenment and the solution to suffering

11 T HE S PREAD OF B UDDHISM Within two centuries after the Buddha died, Buddhism began to spread north and east into Asia By 13 th century Buddhism had disappeared from India

15 B ASICS OF B UDDHISM Buddhists do not believe in a diety, but rather the teachings of one man, Buddha. Holy books in a collection, Tripitaka, tells all of Buddha’s teachings.

16 MONO OR POLY? Like Hinduism, this is confusing. Buddhism is technically NON-theistic (no worship of gods) They do believe in gods and Titans, but they don’t worship them Buddha is not a god, only a teacher

17 B ASIC B ELIEFS Like Hindus, Buddhists believe in… Reincarnation: belief that the soul is reborn into another body after death Karma: good and bad deeds done in one’s life. Believed to affect your next life.

18 W HAT DID THE B UDDHA TEACH ? The Four Noble Truths: to give up greed/selfishness and greedy desires 1. To live is to suffer 2. The cause of suffering is selfishness 3. The solution is to eliminate selfishness thus achieving Nirvana 4. The way to Nirvana is through the “Eight-Fold Path”

19 NIRVANA 1. Nirvana is a peaceful state of mind 2. Achieving Nirvana means escape from the cycle of rebirth 3. Reached by following the Middle Way

32 N OW “ TELL ” ME WHAT YOU KNOW. On a sheet of paper, write the following sentence: What I think I learned about Buddhism is… Make a quick list (10?) of words that you think of when you think of the lesson on Buddhism. Now, use those words to write a paragraph explaining what you learned about Buddhism. Make sure you use the topic sentence above to start your paragraph. Have you included all of the words from your list? Give it to your elbow partner to have them circle the words. Care to share?
