In fact, the Nazis did badly. Look at page 32 Why did they do so badly?

WHY DID SO FEW PEOPLE SUPPORT THE NAZIS IN 1928. Not enough working class support The country was doing well and people felt better off People were put off by Nazi racism (anti- Semitism) and violence

But then…… in 1929

THE WALL STREET CRASH!

Votes cast (millions)

Did Hitler come to power through his own actions or because of other things that happened?

Could Hitler’s rise to power have been prevented?

What were the most important factors that caused Hitler’s rise to power?

THE NAZIS’ OWN ACTIONS: Propaganda Organisation Promises Violence and terror Hitler’s leadership

OTHER EVENTS: Wall Street Crash Fear of Communism Weak opposition Political deals

Why did Hitler’s Nazi Party win power in 1933?

Look at page 33 (purple book) and your sheet The left hand column on your sheet is what the Nazis promised in the 1928 election. Read about the five characters and tick the Nazi policies each would agree with. Then decide who might vote Nazi.

The Weimar System Proportional representation. No one party had a majority. Article 48. The President could sack the Chancellor, ignore the Reichstag and rule on his own

The Weimar Constitution. (page 5) 1. What were the weaknesses of the system? 2. How could Hitler take advantage of this?

Imagine an election with these results… Total votes: green 7 blue 8 red 4 brown 1

Imagine an election with these results…

The parties’ votes overall …

Two different systems…

1. The British system now. ‘First past the post’ Green wins twice as many towns as blue. Only the winner in each town gets a seat in Parliament. Green gets twice as many seats as blue. The other parties get no seats. Strong governments BUT Many people have no voice in Parliament.

2. Weimar Germany Proportional representation. Blue gets the biggest percentage of the vote… … but not a majority. Every party gets seats in Parliament according to their percentage vote. Everyone has a say BUT…. Governments are weak because they have to be coalitions between parties that don’t always agree.

How could Hitler take advantage of this?
