SAFETY Life Science Mr. P

What is it?  Protecting yourself from injury or death  Using common sense to deal with a situation  Preventing something from occurring

Why?  In the lab, many things can be considered dangerous, such as equipment and chemicals.

So what are the rules?  1) Always report an injury or accident to the teacher. Don’t try to fix it yourself.

Rules  2) Do not taste, smell, or touch anything in the lab without being given prior consent. Do not open any cabinets or drawers. Do not try to “experiment” on your own.

Rules  3) No horseplay or running in the classroom.

Rules  4) Work in pairs or groups when instructed to do so.

Rules  5) Broken glass or spilled chemicals, regardless of how mild they are, should be reported to the teacher. Do not try to clean it up yourself.

Rules  6) Wear proper lab attire, such as gloves and safety goggles. Hair should be tied back when working with fire and chemicals.

Rules  7) Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in this classroom. Yes…this is a safety rule.

Rules  8) Always keep your work area clean and return all supplies as instructed by the teacher

Rules  9) Read all lab directions very carefully.

Rules  10) Never take anything home unless given special permission.

Starter 8/9/10  Take a new starter sheet from the front desk.  Question: What do you do during a fire drill?

Fire Drill  What do you do?

Fire Drill  Lets practice.  We are going to line up quietly, and walk out to the field.  Do not talk during this and stay in a straight line.

Earthquake!  What do you do during an earthquake?

Earthquake!  Remain calm  Get under your desk or a piece of sturdy furniture  Cover your head and hold on to the side of the desk

Earthquake!  Do NOT scream  Do NOT run  Do NOT go in the doorway  Do NOT just stand or sit there

Earthquake!  Lets watch a video and point out what they did good and what they did bad.

Earthquake Video  http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player /environment/environment-natural- disasters/earthquakes/earthquake-montage.html http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player /environment/environment-natural- disasters/earthquakes/earthquake-montage.html  http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player /environment/environment-natural- disasters/earthquakes/seattle-quake.html http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player /environment/environment-natural- disasters/earthquakes/seattle-quake.html

Earthquakes  What did they do good?

Earthquakes!  What did they do bad?

Earthquakes  Can be very powerful  Can occur at any time (can NOT be predicted)  Are common out here…they happen all of the time.

San Andreas Fault  Literally right down the street  Can cause an earthquake greater than magnitude 8  Can rupture at any time

Earthquake!  Can last a long time  Can cause significant damage  Can knock out power (or jam phone lines)

Earthquake  Check out this video of a pool in Mexico when the 7.2 Mexicali quake hit last Easter

Final Thoughts  Earthquakes are not to be scared about, as long as you are prepared:  Know what to do during a quake  Know what to do after a quake  Have an earthquake kit in your house

Safety Test  We are going to take a short safety test, to ensure that you are prepared for this course. If you do not pass this test, you can not do labs until it is passed.
