3 Common Home Injuries  Falls (particularly for the elderly)  Poisoning  Fires and burns  Choking and suffocation  Drowning  Guns

4 Highest Risk Groups  Age  Infants – Choking and suffocating  Children – Falls, fires, burns  Elderly – Falls and most other home injuries

5 Falls  Lack of window locks or safety guards  50% of two-story homes do not have protection for children

6 Poisoning  82% of households do not keep medicines in locked drawers or cabinets  69% of homes with young children store chemicals in unlocked areas

7 Other Hazards  Choking  Window blind cords  Electric Shock (loose or defective outlets)  Missing or broken outlet covers  Fires (candles, heaters)  Missing or broken smoke detectors  No fire extinguishers  Burns  Hot water heater burns
