2 Effects of Air Pollution Short-term – reversible; headache, nausea, eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing; increase effects of asthma and emphysema Long-term – emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease

3 Indoor Air Pollution Plastics and other industrial chemicals can make indoors worse than outdoors Sick-building syndrome – very poor air quality indoors Radon gas – comes from uranium and other materials in the Earth’s crust Asbestos – used as insulation and fire retardant, causes asbestosis, a form of cancer

5 Noise pollution Affects human health and quality of life From airplanes, construction, city traffic, factories, lawnmowers, stereos Related health problems include – loss of hearing, high blood pressure, and stress

6 Light Pollution Not a direct hazard to human health Negatively affects the environment Diminishes view of night sky Inefficient lighting is a waste of energy
