Predicting Products in a Chemical Reaction Honors Chemistry

Identify reaction type, predict products and balance: 1.Na + F 2 2.Al + O 2 3.Ag (I) + S NaF +1 -1 22 NEVER EVER EVER CARRY SUBSCRIPTS!! ONLY charges! Al O +3 -2 23 Ag S +1 -2 2 2 3 4 2

Predicting Products – some examples Predict the products and balance: 1.HgO 2.Na 2 S Hg + O 2 2 2 Na + S 2

Classify reaction type, predict products and balance! 1.Li + KNO 3 2.Ag + FePO 4 3.Cl 2 + KBr LiNO 3 + K No reaction KCl + Br 2 2 2

Predicting Products PbCl 2 + Li 2 SO 4 Carry out double replacement reaction (exchange partners) (MUST still have a “+” and “-” bonded together after switch!) Pb SO 4 + Li Cl +2 -1 +1 -2+2 -2 +1 -1 DO NOT CARRY SUBSCRIPTS!!! ONLY CARRY CHARGES!

Predicting Products (continued) PbCl 2 + Li 2 SO 4 Pb(SO 4 ) + Li Cl +2 -1 +1 -2+2 -2 +1 -1 Both sets of charges cancel out, so no need for subscripts for our formulas on the product side! Balance the Equation! 2

Predicting Products – Determining physical states To determine the physical state of our substance, we must use the SOLUBILITY TABLE. Ex: Pb(SO 4 ) Using the chart, match the anion to the cation. (Be as specific as you can!) Low solubility/insoluble – solid formed (s) (s) Cation (+ charge, always listed first in a chemical formula) Anion (- charge, always listed second in a chemical formula)

Predicting Products – Determining Physical State (cont’d) Using the solubility table, determine solubility for LiCl Soluble – so aqueous (aq) Predict the products, balance and determine the physical states for the following: MgCl 2 + AgNO 3 (aq) Mg (NO 3 ) + Ag Cl +2 -1 +1 -1 Mg(NO 3 ) 2 + AgCl 2 2 (aq) (s)

STIPULATIONS ON DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS! Double replacement reactions will ONLY occur if at least ONE of the following happen: 1.Water is formed 2.Gas is produced 3.One of the products precipitates (s) If BOTH products are (aq), NO REACTION will take place!

Combustion: Classify, predict products and balance. 1.C 2 H 6 + O 2 2.C 6 H 6 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O 4 7 2 6 2 15 12 6

Try These: Determine the reaction type, predict the products, determine the physical states (if DD) and balance the following equations. 1.Na + FeBr 3 2.Na(OH) + H 2 (SO 4 ) 3.C 6 H 12 + O 2 4.Pb(SO 4 ) + Ag(NO 3 ) 5.PBr 3 6.LiCl 7.Ca + I 2 8.HBr + Al 9.SeCl 6 + I 2 10.Li 3 N + NH 4 NO 3
