Cellular Respiration Chapter 2
2
What’s Cellular Respiration? Food provides energy Cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose and release the energy they contain. “Cellular Respiration” --- Cells are bringing in food and releasing energy. Oxygen is necessary for cellular respiration to occur.
3
The Respiration Equation Glucose + Oxygen → CO 2 + H 2 O+energy The reactants The products

Stages of Respiration 2 Stage Process --- Stage 1: Takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. Stage 1: Takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. Sugar molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Sugar molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Oxygen is not involved in this stage Oxygen is not involved in this stage Only a small amount of energy is released during this stage. Only a small amount of energy is released during this stage.
5
2 nd Stage Second stage: Takes place in the mitochondria (power-house of the cell). Small molecules are broken down even further. These chemical reactions require oxygen. Great deal of energy is released
6
Photosynthesis vs. Cellular Respiration What’s similar about these two equations? The equations are opposite. Together they form a cycle Glucose + Oxygen → CO 2 + H 2 O+ energy (Cellular Respiration Equation) (Cellular Respiration Equation) CO 2 + H 2 O+ energy → Glucose + Oxygen (Photosynthesis Equation) (Photosynthesis Equation)
