By Kerry Hatfield

The Commissioning process is simply the process of getting your ideas heard by large companies such as the BBC or ITV. It varies for different mediums- Radio will be different to TV.

The BBC only accept proposals from registered producers rather than individuals. The ideas also have to be submitted online through e- Commissioning, which is on their website.

Channel 4 also use eCommissioning They list what features would be appropriate in each genre on their website. For example: Drama  Creativity  Push the Boundaries  Original

1. Generate and develop an idea using a commissioning editor. 2. Send the idea to a broadcaster. 3. Receive a positive or negative response in about a two week period. 4. If positive, you will receive a budget. 5. You will then have to sign a contract- six weeks prior to pre-production commencing.

 Commissioning Editor- Has the final say on whether your show will go into production.  Executive Producer- Responsible for commissioner’s conditions.  Producer- Brings all the elements of the production team together.  Director- Translates the script into visuals.  Researcher- Completes paperwork and background information.

It will be a documentary about how technology has advanced throughout the years. Based from1900 to now- 2013. The program will progress in chronological order- starting in the 1900’s and ending in 2013. It will be a three/ four part series.

Audience- I completed a questionnaire and discovered that most people thought that an Elderly audience was not being reached. I thought this was a gap in the market as most of the elderly are retired therefore out of all the audiences they have the most time to watch TV.

Why will it suit my audience- My show will suit an Elderly audience as it allows them to reminisce and compare what they had as a child to what is available to children now. My show will focus on what technology is available rather than how to use it.

When will it be on? Channel 4 Schedule- Sundays at 8- Popular/ entertaining character based series Weekdays at 9- Reputational/ inspirational series taking us in Britain’s institutions. Weekdays at 10- popular/ entertaining single/ series that take us into darker/ more adult worlds. My show suits Weekdays at 9

Channel 4 are looking for documentaries that are thought provoking, modern and intelligently provocative. The aim of my show is to get the audience thinking whether that during or after the show has ended.

Since channel 4 are looking for creativity I want to present my show in a unique way- rather than just providing random facts. The show could be presented as an Elderly person (the presenter) looking through a photo album- (from when she was young, to now), showing how technology has developed.
