Direct Democracy: Every citizen votes on every new law
Women and slaves were not considered citizens
From the citizens, a Council of 500 were selected randomly to serve.
Any law made by the Council had to be approved by the citizens.

Representative Democracy: Citizens elect representatives to make laws on their behalf
2 Consuls were elected to be head of the government with powers such as leading the military. This is similar to our President.
The Senate was the elected law-making body.
Representatives were elected at the Assembly. Women, slaves, and those born in the provinces were not allowed to vote.

Athens, Greece: world’s 1st direct democracy.
Direct Democracy: laws are made directly by the vote of the citizens
U.S. legacy: Colonial town meetings, the Mayflower Compact, and local town meetings
Rome: founded a republic in 509 BC
Republic: a government which representatives are elected to make laws
U.S. legacy: Colonial legislatures, U.S. Congress, and state legislatures

In Microsoft Word, write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the government of Ancient Athens and Ancient Rome with at least 1 similarity and 1 difference. Your paragraph should also include a sentence describing the influence of each on our national government.
