14 USE NETWORKS TO START ADVISORY COUNCILS THREE FORMS OF NETWORKING Ibarra H. & Lee Hunter M. How Leaders Create and Use Networks. Harvard Business Review. January 2007.

16 PRACTICE DELIVERING YOUR MESSAGE ROLE PLAY SCENARIO 1 Bill is an athletic trainer working in a hospital sports medicine clinic and providing outreach services to a local high school. You and Bill attended college together and still talk on occasion. Bill is familiar with HOSA-Future Health Professionals but has had no formal involvement with HOSA. He is an active member of your college’s alumni association and has served on a planning committee for your state’s annual athletic training conference. When he is not working Bill enjoys traveling with his wife and four children. You know Bill is well connected to other health professionals and would be a valuable addition to your advisory council. Although he expressed concerns about time commitments he agreed to meet with you to discuss the opportunity.

17 PRACTICE DELIVERING YOUR MESSAGE ROLE PLAY SCENARIO 2 Sandy is a physician employed at your state’s health department. You have never met Sandy but read a blog post she wrote on the importance of professional development for emerging leaders in public health. After reading Sandy’s bio on the health department’s webpage you think she might be a valuable addition to your advisory council. You decide to send Sandy an email with information about HOSA- Future Health Professionals and request a meeting to discuss your interest in her joining the advisory council. Sandy replies to your email two weeks later but is very enthusiastic about learning more. When you arrive at the meeting Sandy indicated she had done some additional research on HOSA and appreciates the mission but is not certain how she can be helpful.

18 PRACTICE DELIVERING YOUR MESSAGE ROLE PLAY SCENARIO 3 Shawn has more than 30 years of experience in a variety of professional health jobs prior to becoming the Executive Director of your state’s medical association 5 years ago. Shawn is well respected in the health industry and spends much of his time building networks and developing relationships with influential leaders in your state. You discover you have a mutual colleague with Shawn and ask her to introduce you. Shawn is not familiar with HOSA-Future Health Professionals but is curious and agrees to meet. At your meeting you ask Shawn if he would like to sit on your advisory council. He seems hesitant and expresses concern that no other health professionals have committed to your advisory council yet and he, a highly networked professional, has not heard of HOSA prior to meeting you.
