Wai wurrie? About the career of the MD of MA’s Freek Hasselaar FIDIC September 2005

Content Why this presentation Try out for NEFA, january 2005 My career My considerations Our job The options : stay or go The questions Possible instruments

Why this presentation Some of you are in the same position as I am/ was Want to share my considerations of past year(s) wether or not to change job Want to share my experience of recent change of job

Nefa january 2005 “Try out” of this presentation together with some collegues No direct other opportunity at stake Inspiring discussion Strenghtened me to go on looking around

My career 53 years old/ young Present job: 7,5 years MD of ONRI Previous period : 7 employers, 11 functions Retirement at 63 or later

My considerations Count your blessings: we have a great job! BUT: Now for seven years : some 10 more to go ?? I like my job very much Board is very happy with me So are the members So is my staff There was and there still is much development in the MA and in the job, but will this go on??

The MD and his/her job (1) The MD is often long in his present job The MD was sometimes before this job also in the MA in another job The MD was sometimes before this job in another MA Sometimes he is in this job till retirement So are often his collegues in other countries/ industries

The MD and his/her job (2) The job is complex with many and dynamic issues There is a large and dynamic network The frequent changes of chairman and other boardmembers demand some sustainability in the management of the MA

The MD and his/her job (3) The director is quite independant, the board is at a distance The chairman/ president (his boss) is short time in function An association is not a commercial firm (culture) Sometimes there is no or a weak HRM-policy in the MA The job has often quite some (long existing) routine aspects Some of these facts apply also to members of his staff

The options: stay or go So there are good reasons to stay, and also to move after some years I decided to leave and so wanted my board also, for the sake of myself and the MA They gave me two to three more years I took a coach, used my network, and found surprising opportunities After three months I left

If we stay IF we are already some time in the same job, and IF we want to stay till the end: How can we stay alert, eager, motivated and motivating, innovative, service-minded, well informed, professional at all aspects, output-oriented, at a growing international level, etc. ?

My questions to you Do we globally recognise the description in the sheets about the MD and his/ her job Is this an issue for yourself, and/ or for the MA Is it on the agenda of your board What are the instruments to monitor and to improve the quality and development of our work

Possible instruments of HRM (1) Yearly targets/ criteria for your work Yearly, explicit, written, professional evaluation, and if so, by whom Bonus and/ or sanctions Contract with a restricted term International aspects Trainingprogram, other instruments of development

Possible instruments of HRM (2) Are there professional trainingprograms for MD’s of MA’s Job-rotation (temporarely) Benchmarking with collegues Additional jobs/ functions (outside your job) Other function within the MA (“consultant”) ???

Thank you And I will miss you….
