Lake Okeechobee Okeechobee is mostly water, actually to be more specific it’s 13 percent water. Or as Indians would call Lake Okeechobee “BIG WATER”! But in 1926 “The Great Miami Hurricane” destroyed and flooded the Lake Okeechobee area. Not to mention that it gets worse, it also killed approximately 300 innocent people. But after the hurricane all was well and better. Also the “Hoover Dike” helped Okeechobee by protecting the lake from flooding again.

Originally Okeechobee was owned by Seminole Indians. The Indians fought the white men, or in this case the people who wanted to take the land away from them. But the Indians fought hard but lost the land that they loved. As of today though the Government gave them back some land south of Okeechobee. Osceola was the leader of the Seminole tribe. The Seminole Indians were forced to leave their land, but some stayed and hid in the Everglades. If they were found they would be burned to death or stabbed. But they kept hiding and fighting and eventually after the Civil War they regained their freedom. SEMINOLE INDIANS

We once had a hurricane being so devastating that it killed 2,500 people. That’s a third of the people who lived in Okeechobee at the time. When it hit lake Okeechobee it flooded 75 miles! It was the second recorded hurricane that reached status 5 on the Saffir - Simpsom Hurricane Scale. It brought great devastation through it’s path. The destructive Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928

Amazing Birds There are many different types of birds. Like the Piping Plover, it’s 7 inches tall and weighs 2 ounces. But 68% are dead that's 17.6 million. They are dying because we are destroying there habitat. So only we can help if we work together we can save the birds!

 There are 5 schools there is North Elementary, South Elementary,Central Elementary, Everglades and Seminole. But Central Elementary is the best because it has outstanding teachers, smart students, and great staff. They all compete in a competition called the Math Bowl.
