2 Symbols are everywhere! SYMBOLS ARE USED FOR RELIGION SYMBOLS ARE USED IN ADVERTISEMENT SYMBOLS ARE USED IN SPORTS Each symbol tells a story and stands for something. When people view symbols, they are immediately taken to a certain place and reminded of a particular story. Symbols mean different things to different people. 2 people can look at the same symbol and have a completely different reaction.

3 WHAT DOES THIS SYMBOL REPRESENT? This is the symbol for the Olympic Games. Why are those five colors used? At least 1 of the colors from this symbol is used in EVERY national flag throughout the world. There are 196 countries.

4 The United States of America What do the colors and symbols represent? 13 red/white stripes represent the original 13 British colonies. 50 stars represent the 50 states. White: Innocence Red: Valor Blue: color of the Chief Mexico What do the colors and symbols represent? The eagle represents the ancient Aztec story of the founding of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire. This city later became Mexico city. Green: Independence White: Roman Catholic Religion Red: Union between Spaniards and Mexicans. Japan What do the colors and symbols represent? Japan is known as “the land of the rising sun.” The circle represents the sun without rays. White: Peace/harmony Red: Strength and valor.

6 Your assignment Using the flag template given to you, create a flag that represents who YOU are. REQUIREMENTS TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK! Your finished flag will be displayed for the entire school year! Your flag has a minimum of 3 colors but no more than 5. Your flag contains your initials (First, Middle, Last). Your flag contains at least 1 symbol. The overall design of your flag is creative and unique. Glue your popsicle stick to the end to represent a flag pole. You will also be writing a short summary describing how your flag represents you. This will be done on a separate piece of paper.
