Standard Grade Personal Writing Introduction Exemplars

“A song that brings back memories” There is never any escape from music, it relates always, in some way to a part of someone’s life. A very traditional song, which is normally played on the bagpipes and related to rugby, is Highland Cathedrale. This song is very traditional and famous; it is played at every Scottish rugby match at Murrayfield and is patriotic to both players and supporters of Scottish rugby. This song triggers many happy and nervous feelings for me and also reminds me of my success when I played at Murrayfield stadium when I was 14. I was part of a squad of 22 players who triumphed in a very difficult game of rugby played on the national pitch.

“A song that brings back memories” There is a song called ‘Only Hope’ By Mandy Moore, which holds many memories for me. It is a quiet, ballad song, with the beautiful voice of Mandy Moore accompanied by the piano. The words are like words from a love song – ‘I lift my hands and pray to be only yours, I know now you’re my only hope…” “ Sing to me the song of the stars, of your galaxy, dancing and laughing, and laughing again…” I first heard the song in the summer of 2005 at my friend Natasha’s house when we watched a film together, called ‘A Walk To Remember’. I loved the film as well as the song and it’s now one of my favourites. During this summer my best friend and I had started to drift apart so I was feeling a bit lonely and down. However, not seeing my best friend as much meant I was becoming closer to Natasha as I spent more time with her, and as I discovered the song around this time, it reminds me very much of her. Along with this, the personal experience that this song relates to is when I performed a dance to it. It was with Natasha and my friend Sarah and we were performing it at a concert to raise money for a charity. In this essay I am going to write about my thoughts and feelings from when I was performing, and how it relates to my song.

“A song that brings back memories” ‘Music, the soundtrack to our lives’ relates to the way in which music has a part to play in our lives. This essay is on a personal experience I have had in which music plays a large part. I have based my experience on the song ‘Lip gloss and Black’ by ‘Atreyu’, a song which now reminds me of a time when I struggled to learn even the smallest things. Yet this essay is not about a trip I went on or gig I went to, but learning a piano solo which even to this day I still love listening to.

“Sisters” The Oxford dictionary defines a sister as: “a daughter of the same parents as another person”, but there is much more to sisters than just that. It is a very important and complicated relationship: some sisters get on, some don’t. However, all sisters will always have the connection of having the same parents and, hopefully, growing up together.
