Ballistics and Firearms Examination

Ballistics Slow motion bullet 1:00 (same as opening day) http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1 &feature=endscreen&v=emP5D9Klssg

*Ballistics The term ballistics refers to the science of the travel of a projectile in flight. The flight path of a bullet includes: travel down the barrel, path through the air, and path through a target. Internal travel: within the firearm External travel: from firearm to target Terminal travel: hitting the target

*Questions To Be Considered What sort of weapon was involved? From what distance & direction was it fired? What type of projectile was fired? Can the projectile be matched to the weapon? Can the cartridge case be matched to the weapon? Was the shooting accidental or deliberate? Who fired first?

*Gunpowder China – circa 1000 Used for fireworks & celebrations Sulfur Charcoal Potassium nitrite

*Rifling Machine

*Rifling Patterns

Manufacturing of Firearm Barrels *The results of rifling gives a barrel its class characteristics * Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners Glossary 4th Edition

Class Characteristics All class characteristics are measurable 123 CaliberCaliber Number of lands and groovesNumber of lands and grooves Width of the lands and groovesWidth of the lands and grooves Direction of twist (left)Direction of twist (left)

Manufacturing of Firearm Barrels *Each barrel has four class characteristics 1.Caliber (bore diameter:.357,.22,.45) 2.Number of lands and grooves 3.Direction of twist 4.Width of the lands and grooves

Caliber *Caliber of bullet is referring to the size of the bullet in inches, or millimeters. A ".357 Magnum" has a bullet which is, as you probably guessed -.357 of an inch in diameter. A "9mm"

Theory of Firearm Identification Marks produced by the random imperfections or irregularities of tool surfaces, corrosion, or damage. They are unique to that tool and distinguish it from all other tools.* Bullets and cartridge cases can be compared using marks left on them through their contact with a firearm. * Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners Glossary 4th Edition
