2 W HAT ARE RISK BEHAVIORS ? Risk behaviors are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others both in the present and the future. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – cdc.gov 6 risk behaviors for teens Tobacco use Poor nutrition Inadequate exercise Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors Unintentional injuries and violence

3 U NINTENTIONAL I NJURIES & A CCIDENTS Motor vehicle accidents are the #1 cause of death among teens 7.6% never or rarely wore seatbelt 21.9% rode with a drunk driver 10% drove when drinking 41% texted or emailed while driving

4 U NINTENTIONAL I NJURIES & A CCIDENTS Homicide/Suicide is the #2 cause of death for teens 80% of teen homicides involve firearms Alcohol is involved in over 40% of teen homicides

5 A LCOHOL & OTHER D RUGS 47% of all high school students regularly use alcohol 30% binge drink 30% have ridden with a drunk driver in the past month 13% have driven while drunk in the past month 1/4 of high school students regularly smoke marijuana 4% of teens are current cocaine users 2% of teens are current inhalant users 2-3% of teens use heroin

6 T OBACCO 1/3 of all teens currently use tobacco 90% of adult smokers began to smoking as adolescents 3/4 of teens smokers have made at least one quit attempt

7 S EXUAL B EHAVIOR Over 46% of high school teens are sexually active 14% have had > 4 sexual partners Almost half of teens having sex do not regularly use condoms Teens have the highest STD rates of any age group ( 1 out of 4) 20% of high school students have been the victim of rape or forced sex.

8 P OOR N UTRITION Half of all teens are actively trying to lose weight 1 % have anorexia 3% have bulimia Female teens are 10-20 times more likely than male teens to have disordered eating 13% of teens are obese. 79% did not eat the recommendations for fruits and vegetables 34% drank a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop (not including diet soda or diet pop) at least one time per day

9 E XERCISE RDA for exercise is 60 minutes 65% did not meet recommended levels of physical activity. 46% did not attend physical education classes. 35% watched television 3 or more hours per day on an average school day. 25% played video or computer games or used a computer for something that was not school work for 3 or more hours per day on an average school day.
