3 Community Health Assessment Phase 2: Community Health Assessment Survey Conducted during 2003-2005 3 Surveys: Adult, Teen and Child Questions on health behaviors and barriers Approximately 3000 surveys collected Data weighted according to age, race, gender, and zip code Results will guide Public Health’s plans and programs

7 Alcohol and Substance Abuse 35% drank alcohol within the last month 56% of the drinkers binge drank (5 or more drinks) on at least one occasion in the last month 11% rode in a vehicle with a drinking driver in the past month. Out of the people who consumed alcohol, 14% used illegal drugs in the past year 8% used illegal drugs in the past year

8 Nutrition and Physical Activity 62% exercised < 3 times a week for 20 minutes 37% ate fast food > 2 times a week <25% eat fruits, vegetables, and dairy products more than 8 X a week 1 in 5 drinks soda at least 8 X a week

9 Cancer 2nd leading cause of death Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women

10 Violence 32% of the respondents own firearms 45% of firearm owners did NOT keep firearms in a locked place 12% of the respondents were victims in a violent crime 45% of these crimes took place in home, 30% in neighborhood

11 Diabetes 7th leading cause of death in CA and Stanislaus County 10% were diagnosed or treated for diabetes 13% of the diabetics did nothing to control their condition 60% did not modify their diet or increase their physical activity 13% never had an annual diabetic check-up by a health care professional 9% had no insurance, 32% had Medi-Cal, and 27% had Medi-Care

12 Asthma 16% were diagnosed or treated for asthma 40% were not currently taking any medications to control asthma, including an inhaler 26% were never taught how to use an inhaler correctly 60% did not know how to use a peak flow meter 41% were not taught how to avoid triggers 49% were not told how to recognize early signs of an asthma attack 32% visited an ER or UC center 17% did not have any insurance while 41% had Medi-Cal

14 Tobacco Over 30% of the respondents are current tobacco users 14% were trying to quit 25% former users Smoking attributes to: 7 X the deaths from Diabetes 5 X the deaths from Accidents 5 X the deaths from Influenza

15 Sexually Transmitted Diseases The number of reported gonorrhea cases has almost doubled from 2002 (292 cases) to 2003 (538 cases) Chlamydia is the number 1 reported communicable disease for the last decade with over 1800 cases reported last year

16 Cholesterol 19% were diagnosed or treated for high cholesterol

17 Hepatitis C 3rd most reported communicable disease More prevalent in the African American population and in the 30-45 year old age group
