Muscular System Function Along with the skeletal system, muscles provide movement for all the body’s parts. Muscles also allow for internal movement of body organs that have no bones.

3 Types of Muscles Smooth -involuntary Cardiac -involuntary Skeletal -voluntary Involuntary– Muscles that move under the direction of the nervous system and various chemicals in the body; Contract and relax rhythmically without the conscious control of the brain; work automatically Voluntary– Muscles that move under conscious will; you control them

Smooth Muscles Muscles found in various organs, such as the esophagus small intestine and stomach

Cardiac Muscles Muscles only found in the heart; heart beat They contract and relax about 70 times a minute without ever stopping or getting tired.

Skeletal Muscles Muscles that pull on bones to move them. Strong fibers called tendons connect skeletal muscle to bones. Example: walking, playing an instrument

Good Morning! Ple ase take out and finish the Concept Check: Muscles in the Body.

How Muscles Work By contracting or becoming shorter and thicker - receive impulses from the nervous system - work in pairs - when one muscle is contracting the other is relaxing

How Muscles Work Muscle Tone- slight constant contraction of a muscle that is due to contractioin of some of its fibers - enables you to maintain your posture - Atrophy- when muscles weaken or shrink, caused by injury or underuse

Keeping your Muscles Healthy Avoid using anabolic steroids– artificial forms of the male hormone testosterone Muscle strain- or pulled muscle Torn muscle- when muscle fibers rip Tendonitis- overuse of a tendon, painful swelling and irritation Muscle cramp- strong, uncontrolled muscle contraction

Treatment and Prevention Treatment includes: RICE - Rest - Ice - Compression - Elevation Prevention includes: -stretching - drinking water - varying routine

Be prepared to report out to the class. Show the class your exercise and explain what muscles are used.
