2 warm-up 11/10/11 Read p. 347. How did Jefferson Davis serve the country before the Civil War? What was his role during the Civil War?

3 Confederate States of America  On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede.  Soon, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas also seceded.  11 states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America.  Jefferson Davis became the president.  They wrote a Constitution making slavery legal.

4 Civil War  A civil war is a war between people of the same country.  There have been many civil wars, but one of the worst happened in America.  The American Civil War was fought to keep the South from leaving the Union.  Slavery was the major issue that separated the North from the South.

5 Why did the Civil War begin?? South wanted states’ sovereignty, North wanted national sovereignity. South seceded from the Union Lincoln elected President. South felt like he would abolish slavery. South wanted low tariffs (taxes), North wanted high tariffs to protect their goods against cheaper imports South wanted slave labor, north wanted paid labor

9 The Civil War began at Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was a US military fort behind Confederate lines. The Confederacy wanted Fort Sumter to surrender. Lincoln refused. Before he could resupply it, the South attacked. (p. 357)

12 New Weapons  Many new weapons were used during the Civil War.  One of these weapons was an ironclad ship. An ironclad ship was a ship with iron plates on it to protect it from cannon fire.
