LET’S CLASSIFY A Unit Plan Presented by: Madid, Shahria Open, Leah Mae

Unit Summary Our planet earth is consists of many millions of distinct biological species that interacts and live symbiotically with each other. This unit will provide the students an overview with the different diversities of life from microorganisms to macroorganisms. Students will collect specimen and classify it until the genus level and collaborate with the other groups for the organization of exhibit for display of the collected and classified specimen. For a month of learning meaningful experiences, the students will apply the concepts and skills in this unit in their classification.

Curriculum Framing Questions Essential Question Is the order in a world of seeming disorder?

Curriculum Framing Questions Unit Questions Why are there so many different species? How classification is done? How is biological diversity shown among plants? How is biological diversity shown among animals?

Curriculum Framing Questions Content Questions What are the characteristics shared by all species? What are the levels of classification? Howa are microorganism classified? How are animals classified? How are plants classified?

LET’S CLASSIFY PROJECT This project will help my students develop 21 st century skills by: Collaborating with peers and other groups Analyzing data being observed in the specimen. Writing down the characteristics of each collected specimen.

Gauging Student Needs Assessment Use CFQ’s to learn 1. Importance of classifying organisms 2. The diversity of life shown among plants and animals Assessment information 1. Use of herbarium project. 2. Summary of characteristics, handouts and questions prior to the project. 3. Students consultation and feedbacks on the project.

..continuation… Order of life brochure Preserve animal project.

My Goals for my Course Find ways to get my students interested and understand the science of taxonomy. Share the collected and classified specimen to all the students in the campus.

My Goals for my Students To learn how taxonomist and systematist classify species. To become more meticulous observers.
