Early Expansion A.Treaty of Greenville 1.Settlers having issues with Native Americans in the Northwest territory. 2.Battle of Fallen Timbers (Ohio)- Americans won a decisive victory against Native American tribes. 3.Treaty A.12 NA nations agree to give up land in Northwest territory B.They would receive a yearly payment of $10,000 from the federal government C.Flow of Americans increased in the region

5 I. Early Expansion B.Lewis and Clark 1.Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition along the Missouri and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific Ocean. 2.Provided a wealth of information about the newly purchased territory and gave the US claim to the Oregon territory

Early Expansion C.Essex Junto 1.Worried that expansion would mean that they would lose political influence, a small group of Federalists drafted a plan to take New England out of the Union 2.Aaron Burr was sympathetic to the cause and agreed to run for governor of New York. A.Alexander Hamilton called Burr a dangerous man and was challenged to a duel. B.July 11, 1804, Burr shot and killed Hamilton

Early Expansion D.Missouri Compromise 1.As Americans began to expand westward, the Era of Good Feelings began to dissolve and sectional disputes came to divide America. 2.Missouri Statehood A.1819- 11 free states and 11 slave states B.To ensure the balance of power between North and South, Maine was admitted to the union as a free state and Missouri as a Slave state. C.Senate added an amendment to prohibit slavery in the rest of the Louisiana territory.

8 I. Early Expansion D.Missouri Compromise 3.Henry Clay carefully steered the amended bill through the House of Representatives. 4.Missouri compromise TEMPORARILY settled the dispute over the westward expansion of slavery.
