Lesson Plan - High School Cooperative, Responsible, Respectful Skill: Paying Attention To and Following Teacher Directions Rationale: Paying attention to teachers’ instructions by sitting quietly, looking at the teacher, actively listening, and asking questions if you do not understand, is a responsible and respectful way of following teacher directions. If you are actively paying attention to teacher directions it will be easier to figure out what you are supposed to do.

12. High School, continued Skill Steps: Sit quietly and face your teacher. Use your active listening skills. Think about what the teacher is saying. Decide if you understand the directions. Ask a clarifying question if you do not understand the directions. Skill steps should be posted and taught. Adult will model each skill step and the corresponding metacognition.

13. High School, continued Example: Model the skill steps of paying attention and active listening. Ask the questions of what it looks like when someone is listening? What are some things that may distract you from listening? What can you do if you don’t understand what someone is saying? Non-Example: Adult only demonstrate the non-example. Show the common behaviors that students display when they are not paying attention or actively listening (putting head down on desk, looking off into space, talking to peers, drawing or playing with objects)

14. High School, continued Student Activity: Group students in pairs. Have students conduct interviews asking ten general questions. The students then introduce their classmate to the class. Students explain how they used paying attention and active listening skills.
