1 Cecil Tharp Pesticide Education Program MSU Extension 2015 Template

2  Also Known as a Farm Applicator Certification  This license allows individuals to apply restricted use pesticides on land they own, rent or lease.  Must be on land used as an agricultural commodity.  Rangeland/Pasture  Forests  Ag Crops

3  Private Applicator License  This isn’t a commercial license (for contract or hire)  This isn’t a government license  Spraying while working as a government or tribal employee

4  Restricted Use  Significant adverse effects upon human and/or animal health or significant environmental considerations.  Tordon 22K, Warrior 1E, Aluminum phosphide, Lorsban, Zinc phosphide, Guthion  General Use  Forefront, Milestone, 2,4-D, Banvel, Curtail, Roundup

5  They may purchase, apply, or handle restricted use pesticides under your license.  Immediate family members (spouse, children)  Employees (Worker Protection Safety Training Mandatory)  Request that the Montana Department of Ag issue you 2 permits (a duplicate) REMEMBER: You are responsible for their safety and actions?

6  You can  Apply RuPs to land that you own, rent, or lease  Apply GuPs to land of your immediate neighbor as long as it is not done commercially

7  Apply RuPs commercially  Apply RuPs on land of your immediate neighbor  Give your license to non- family members or non- employees to purchase RuPs  Sell or give away pesticides

9  Take an open book exam at the extension office  Pass with a 70%  Attend an approved private applicator initial certification event (6 hours of training) and take an ungraded quiz  Complete the application  Sign it!  Include proper fees  Mail it to the Montana Dept. of Agriculture

11  Pesticide applicators applying restricted use pesticides on land they own, rent or lease within tribal boundaries must have in their possession:  a Montana private applicator license  EPA pesticide certification card  Tribal applicators will need to fill out the tribal pesticide request form.  No fee.  http://www2.epa.gov/pesticide-applicator-certification-indian-country http://www2.epa.gov/pesticide-applicator-certification-indian-country

12  Private applicator will need send the request form with a copy of their Montana Private Applicator License (both sides) to EPA: US EPA, Region 8 Attn: Region 8 Certification 1595 Wynkoop St, 8P-P3T Denver, CO 80202

13  Based on a 5 year cycle  Prorated Amounts  1 st year - $50  2 nd year – $40  3 rd year - $30  4 th year - $20  5 th year - $10

15  Certification Period January 1 st 2011 – December 31 st 2015 - Pro-rating of fees: If you reside in region 3 and are initially certified within 2015 then the fee is $10. On January 1 st, 2016 the region 3 applicator will need to pay another $50 for the next 5 year cycle.

16  1993 legislature  $50 to renew  $15 (30%) to MT Dept of Ag for administration  $20 (40%) to MSU Extension to support training  15 to MSU Extension counties  5 to MSU Administration  $15 (30%) to fund the pesticide collection program

17  Need to obtain 6 private applicator recertification credits prior to your regions deadline.  This is waived if you are certified in the last year of the cycle  Applicators will be pro-rated 3 private applicator recertification credits if they become certified after the middle of their certification cycle.  Region 4: After July 1 st of 2014

23  Online Credits  Available online at www.pesticides.montana.edu by selecting ‘Private’ and ‘Online Credits’.www.pesticides.montana.edu  You can accumulate 2 recertification credits by taking the online quizzes (10 questions each)  Instructions & prices vary (PEP exams are $10 each)  Closed Book Exam  You may take the closed book exam in the last year of the cycle to qualify for recertification (pass with >70%)

25  Must take a closed book Montana Private Applicator Certification Exam during the recertification year (6th year), and answer 70% of the questions correctly  Or attend a 6 h initial certification course and take the ungraded quiz.  Or wait 12 months and re-qualify with an open book graded exam

26  All applicators must have a copy of the:  EPA core manual  Montana addendum  Must fill out the farm applicator permit form.  Must send form to MDA with the appropriate fee.
