Around the corner I have a friend, in this great city that has no end. Yet days go by and weeks rush on, and before I know it a year is gone, And I never see my old friend`s face, for life is a swift and terrible race. He knows I like Hi just as well as in the days when I rang his door bell, And he rang mine--we were younger then, and now we are busy, tired men. Tired with playing a foolish game. Tired with trying to make a name. “Tomorrow" I say “I will call on Jim just to show I`m thinking of him. But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, and the distance grows and grows. Around the corner --yet miles away--- “Here`s a telegram, sir—” Jim Died Today And that`s what we get, and deserve in the end, around the corner, a vanished friend. -AL RUSS Last Week Speaker This Week Ed Zazzarino 4/2 Birthday Bill & Jane Bull 4/4 Anniversary Bill & Glenice Fogg 4/4 Anniversary Howard & Hazel Brown 4/6 Anniversary Butch & Bev Shadwell 4/6 Anniversary Next Week Bill Bull 4/7/1988 Date Joined Herman Bass 4/8 Birthday Bill Montgomery 4/13/1995 Date Joined Only in America Only in America......can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance. She is a Financial Advisor for Raymond James Financial, and lives in Jacksonville. Let’s keep growing! Bring a potential member with you to a Kiwanis meeting, or call on a member who has not been attending regularly. As an inspirational message, I quoted a poem as to how harmful procrastination can be as it relates to retention of existing members, and how important it is to call members who miss meetings. Not only to show we miss them, but to find out if there is anything we can do to get them to attend our meetings------- Procrastination Caring Connection Do you know about the Caring Connection? You will find it on our Florida Kiwanis website (www.FloridaKiwanis.com). There you can add your concerns about people who are sick or in need by sending their name, club name, and a brief statement of their needs to the District Office (attn: Jose). This is a great way to support and care for our fellow Kiwanians. In case you don’t know, the Light House is a residence hall for patients and their care givers who live outside of Duval County. For the modest fee of $20 per night, out- of-towners being treated at a local medical center, get a clean safe place to live while away from home. When you consider all of the other expenses and stresses on people in this situation, there is no doubt that this place and those who run it are a godsend. Incorporated in 1996, they have been in operation since late 1997. Residents have access to a complete kitchen and laundry facilities. Most of the operations of this project are from volunteer labor. And, the modest operating budget depends on the support of local contributors, businesses and foundations. At this time they only have room for 7 resident patients at a time, but they hope to be building on additional space soon. If you want to get involved, call Ed at 246- 5606. - Butch Shadwell Last week Ed Asher, the Executive Director of St. Andrew’s Light House, talked to us about the great work they do there. Mother’s Day Rose Sale Division Council Meeting We will start selling on Apr. 7, and all orders must be in by Apr. 28. Roses will be distributed to members on May 5. It’s not final, but we believe the price will be $15/dozen. Thank Max Booke and John Bates for putting this project together for us.
