3  Students qualify for GATE in Etiwanda by meeting either of the following criteria on the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test):  Composite Percentile Rank Score of 90 or higher  Student Age Score of 128 or higher in any area (verbal, quantitative, nonverbal).

4  This score is a broad comparison of your child’s performance on the CogAT to all of the students in the same grade who took the test nationally.  Percentile Rank is a scale from 1-99. A score of 50%ile rank is right in middle of the curve and is considered average.  We use the 90 th %ile rank as the minimum cut point for GATE identification. A percentile rank score of 90 means that your child scored equal to or better than 90% of the students who took the test.

5  This is an age comparison that compares students who are born within the same month interval.  The SAS is additionally broken down into the three test sections (Quantitative, Verbal and Non Verbal). With this score we take all three areas into consideration for GATE identification simply because a child may or may not be gifted in all three areas but perhaps in one area.  We are looking for any SAS score equal to or greater than 128. According to the publisher of the CogAT, an SAS score of 100 is considered the mean or average score.

6  Bloom’s Taxonomy  Combined with the 4 Depths of Knowledge levels from routine and conceptual thinking, to strategic and extended reasoning.  Universal Access  Done weekly to target the learning needs of GATE/advanced, proficient, underperforming, and English learner students.

7  Differentiation Strategies  Thinking Skills Development ▪ Critical, Creative, Problem-Solvers, Big ideas, etc.  Content ▪ Depth and Complexity  Resources ▪ Multiple, Varied, and Advanced  Product ▪ Scholarly, Challenging, etc.

8  Battle of the Books  Science Fair  GATE Field Trip  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)  Accelerated Reader  Odyssey of the Mind???  Sylvan Coding Academy  Robotics League (Optional)

9  Odyssey of the Mind is dependent on Parent Volunteers as coaches  Volunteer  Hours and weekly obligation for meetings  Time and travel on weekends  Cost of travel, gas, food  Could include hotel and airfare, not to mention time away from work = all voluntary from parent – no fundraising.

10  TEAMS:  Teams meet every week after school on site  Days will be decided by what works best for coach and team  All teams need a Coach and preferably an Asst. Coach  Teams are limited to 7 students  Each team must also have one Judge  Perm. Slip and contract from ea. student

11  Coaches:  In charge of 7 students who will work together with NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE from adults. Coach supports and guides, but does not give answers or suggest ideas.  Coaches need to be fingerprinted  Coaches need to attend training  Judges need to attend training

12  Expenses:  Will include – costumes, props, backdrops, etc. (This is minimal as we are limited on what we are allowed to spend.)  Driving, food, time to and from competitions: ▪ Regional in Palm Desert on Saturday, March 7 ▪ State in Riverside on Saturday, March 28th
