1 GATE/SAS Parent Meeting

2 (School for Advanced Studies)
PROGRAMS GATE (Gifted & Talented) Identified through LAUSD procedures. Academic-Related Areas: Intellectual, High Achievement, Specific Academic. Talent Areas: Performing Arts, Dance, Leadership, Visual Arts, Creative SAS (School for Advanced Studies) Program to address the needs of identified GATE students in academic-related areas or meet the criterion to be identified. Permit issued for students who do not reside within school boundaries. Extension for the Gifted Magnet schools Different SAS schools throughout the district.

3 BUDGET Purpose of Funding: Provide school with money to augment the instructional program for GATE students and in the identification of potential GATE students from all ethnic, linguistic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Amount Allocated to School: $25 per identified student. Example of Expenditures: instructional materials, professional development activities, instructional equipment, and curricular field trips.

4 CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
Purpose: Provide students with standards-based differentiated curriculum. Student Outcomes: A positive learning experience that will challenge their area of strengths including talented students.

7 CLUSTERING STUDENTS Students are programmed into classes that are identified SAS/GATE classes. They are clustered together.

8 Parent Involvement Parent Representative Needed: Attend Meetings and assist school in the development of the Local GATE/SAS plan. Three Meetings During School Year: Topics will Reflect Parent Needs.

9 LOCAL GATE/SAS PLAN Purpose: School-wide Plan to Address the Needs of the GATE/SAS students. Goals Established Critical Thinking Arts and Communication Skills Mandatory Goal

10 CRITICAL THINKING Objectives Demonstrates Knowledge of Facts.
Investigates Problems, Issues, Facts and Concepts. Organizes Data. Evaluation Methods Teacher-Made Test Judgement Portfolios Combination of Any Above

11 ARTS & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
OBJECTIVES Applies appropriate mechanics of the art of communication skill. Displays imagination through verbal and nonverbal expression. Is receptive to instructions or criticism. EVALUATION METHODS Teacher-Made Test Checklist Observation Form

12 CST scaled score of 450 or higher
Mandatory Goal CST scaled score of 450 or higher

13 STUDENT EVALUATIONS Teacher Required to Evaluate Student Based on Goals. Distributed to Student/Parent for Review.

15 Additional Assistance
Utilize the Millikan Student Agenda. Speak to the Individual Teacher(s). Conference with Counselor. Homework Assistance: Room 58 every Tuesday until 3:00 PM. When all the above has been followed, speak to an administrator(s).
