2 Vocabulary Lavish: is richly decorated and looks impressive Dreaded: you have greatly feared it happening Ascent: when you make a steep upward climb

3 Doomed: it is expected that something terrible will happen Murky: Is dark and difficult to see through Remains: parts that are left of something that has died, grown old, or been destroyed

4 Direct Quotation Direct Quotation – Person’s exact words as they are spoken. Set off from the rest of the the sentence by: Commas Question Marks Exclamation Points First word of Quotation should begin with an UPPERCASE letter and Quotation Mark Periods and commas should always be placed inside of Quotation ? & ! If the quote itself is a question. Ex: “Can you do anything?” asked Cherie. If a period would normally end the quote, but more words follow the quote in a sentence, the period should become a comma. Ex: “A new family moved in next door,” said Sarah.

5 Practice – Correct the following mistakes 1. “I bet your pardon”? asked Franco. 2. “now, let’s go.” said Joe. 3. Beth said, “That’s funny. I never heard any of these songs. 4. Carly said, “this is great!” 5. Darah said, “we get to dance on stage.” 6. “They never agree”, said Mrs. Allen. 7. “come on,” said Juan. 8. They shouted, “watch out Trudy!”

6 Divided Quotations A divided quotation is when a speaker tag interrupts a direct quotation Speaker tag = he said, she asked, Juan replied, etc. When a speaker tag interrupts and quotation, it should be set off with commas. All other punctuation rules apply from the direct quotations slide Ex: “I am thinking of the planets,” said Eva, “and if they have water.” Note that when the quote continues the first letter IS NOT capitalized!

7 Practice They used to be friends said Tom but now they are enemies. Everything is so sticky said Kim but we’re going to clean it up later.

8 Colons (:) Use a colon after a statement to introduce a list or series Example: Buy these items at the grocery store: milk, eggs, and bread. DO NOT USE A COLON RIGHT AFTER A PREPOSITION OR VERB Example: When you go to the store, buy milk, eggs, and bread. Use a colon right after the greeting of a formal business letter Example: Mr. Bollini: I am writing to inform you that your face is stupid….

9 Practice When you come to class bring a pen paper and a colored pencils. Bring the following to class a pen paper and colored pencils.
