Phase I The children looked through many books to try and come up with a topic to study. They had several different topics that interested them such as bones, horses, trucks, etc. The children narrowed their choices to two: horses and trucks. Next, we looked through many books about horses and trucks. Overall, the children really enjoyed looking through the books about horses. Finally, the children came to the decision that we would study horses. Next, we wrote down on our KLEW chart what the children know about horses and what they want to know about horses. The children then made their representation of a horse by drawing it.

Top left: The children told us what they know about horses and we put this into the K portion of the KLEW chart. Top Middle: The children drew their representation of a horse. Right: The children asked questions about what they wanted to know about horses and we wrote them on the W portion of the KLEW chart

Phase II Throughout this phase the children expressed what they have learned and how they know they learned that. We wrote these down on our KLEW chart. The children participated in labeling the body parts of a horse as well as the different parts of a horse’s hoof. Another aspect of this phase was allowing the children to explore a saddle, different grooming materials, and different types of food horses eat. The children made several creations including a tracing of their foot and a horse shoe, a toilet paper roll horse, and horse shoes. During this phase, we had a guest visitor. Dr. Heeter and her horse Rocky came to visit our class on Wednesday, November 19th. Dr. Heeter brought a lot of materials for the children to explore during her visit. The children really enjoyed themselves during this time. They enjoyed seeing a real horse and comparing their horse to Rocky. Also during this phase the children made thank you cards for Dr. Heeter and Rocky.

Top Left: Miss Amber reads the children a story about horses. Top Middle: Elizabeth labels where the hoof is. “The hoof is right here.” Top Right: The children trace their foot and a horse shoe. They also create a horse shoe for their culminating horse project. Bottom Left: Livia labels a part of the horse’s hoof. Bottom Middle: Braden uses the hoof pick on the horse shoe. “This is how you use it… see.” Bottom Right: Kade, Braden, and Livia pretend to sleep like horses. “Shh… We are sleeping just like horses.” –Braden

Top Left: The children showing the different types of feed that horses eat. Top Middle: Livia creating her toilet paper roll horse. Top Right: Kade, Elizabeth & Braden with the saddle. “I’m holding on to the horn!” –Elizabeth Bottom: The children painting the saddle for the culminating project.

For the culminating project, we decided that we would have the children create a horse together. We provided the children with many materials and media in order to create their horse. Cardboard box = horse’s barrel Wrapping paper tube = horse’s neck Mane and tail = yarn Paper bag lunch sack = horse’s head Saddle and horseshoes already made from previous lessons. Wrapping paper rolls = 4 legs Ribbon and aluminum foil = bridle Lastly, we had the children create their representation of a horse the same way they did in phase I. It was very rewarding seeing how the children progressed over the course of the three weeks we taught. It felt great seeing that the children learned so many body parts of the horse and incorporated those into their representations. Phase III
