To identify pronouns in the nominative and objective cases To demonstrate control over the accurate use of the subject pronoun in formal writing and speaking CCSS – 6.L.1

She and he brought it to him and her.

The subject pronouns are: Iweyou he, she, itthey Again, subject pronouns are said to be in the nominative case.

The object pronouns are: meusyou him, her, itthem Again, object pronouns are said to be in the objective case.

A subject pronoun is used as the subject of a sentence or as a predicate noun. He jumped up on the couch and chased the fly. Willie is a crazy dog. The dog that rids my house of flying insects is he.

An object pronoun is used as the object of a verb or preposition. The flying insects never escape him. Willie is a crazy dog. My house is flying insect free because of him.

Make sure you use the correct pronoun in the correct place - a subject pronoun in the subject and an object pronoun in the object. When you use a pronoun in a compound, it always comes last.

Rickie immediately jumped up and joined Willie and me. Rickie immediately jumped up and joined me.

Hint

Never, ever, ever should I hear: Me and him went home. Me and Bill want that cookie. Her and me wish that we could speak using proper grammar.

It is she who drives Mr. B nuts. The winner is I, not you, so I get the prize. The best students were they, but then the others actually studied for once.

If the sentence sounds really awkward to you, switch around the subject and the predicate noun; it will sound much better, and you will know you are right. The winner is I, not you, so I get the prize. The best students were they, but then the others actually studied for once. Hint

Worksheet – can work with a partner, but everyone completes their own sheet.
