1. BELLWORK Welcome back!! I hope you all had a great Holiday Break! Sit anywhere you would like for today. Get out a piece of paper and answer the following questions: 1.What was your favorite thing about history class last semester? 2.What are some things you would like to do (or change) this semester? 3.THINKER: Overall, were you happy with your semester 1 grade? Why or why not?

2. History “Refresher” sheet We are now going to take a few minutes to review over my class policies and procedures.

3. New Years Resolution Many people make resolutions, goals, or promises on the New Year in order to improve their lives in someway. Today we are going to take time to reflect on 2011 and make resolutions for the New Year! Get out a piece of paper, and copy the following chart onto it.

5. New Years Resolution In the “RESOLUTION” column, you must come up with five SPECIFIC resolutions you want to achieve. (Must be realistic!) 3 must be school related, and 2 must be personal BAD EXAMPLE: I want good grades. GOOD EXAMPLE: I want a 90% in math BAD EXAMPLE: Do my homework GOOD EXAMPLE: Do homework 3 nights a week BAD EXAMPLE: Save money GOOD EXAMPLE: Save $30 a week for a new T.V.

6. New Years Resolution In the “PROBLEMS” column, list the problems that might affect the completion of your resolution. For example: If your resolution is to do homework 3 nights a week, a problem could be sport practice or not keeping track of assignments. If your resolution is to save $30 a week for a new T.V., a problem could be that you have to use the money towards food, or you do not have a job.

7. New Years Resolution In the “HOW TO ACHIEVE” column you are going to write characteristics that will help you achieve your goal. FOR EXAMPLE: If your resolution is to do homework 3 nights a week, writing in a planner or bringing your book home will help you achieve that goal. If your goal is to save money for a T.V., getting a job or stop buying clothes will help you achieve that goal.

8. New Years Resolution Write a one-paragraph summary about ONE of your resolutions. Pick the one you think is the most important. Summarize the resolution Why is it important? How can you achieve it? We will reflect back on your goals in the beginning of May!

9. Top 10 of 2011 Besides New Years Resolutions, people also make top 10 lists for each year. For a fun activity, you are now going to create your OWN top 10 list of 2011. This is just another way to reflect on the year passed. You can do a top 10 list for anything you chose! Fashion trends, movies, sport events, personal achievements, celebrities, music Create your OWN list on the back of your Resolutions graph.

11. Family History Almost everything on the planet has some sort of history, but history is NOT limited to dates or events. You can also use history to study the background of your family. This week we are going to talk about family history. Learning the history of your family is important because it gives you background information about your heritage, culture, descendants, etc. In order to do this we will start by creating a family tree

14. Your Family Tree Today you are going to work on a rough draft of your family tree. Include: parents, grandparents, siblings, great-grandparents; also, any death or birthdates you can find. Be as detailed as you possibly can! I realize a lot of people will have difficulty finding a lot of information, but do your best! You are the genealogist, so do research to figure it out! Talk to your parents, call your grandparents, etc.

15. Your Family Tree There are many different ways to make a family tree – so I am leaving it up to you!! Just make it as detailed and accurate as possible. Since no one’s family is the same, you can add changes based on YOUR family’s history! For example: If you are adopted, you might chose to do a family tree for your adopted family instead of your birth parents If you do not know one side of your family, you can do as much as possible but focus on the side you are more familiar with. If you are closer to a step parent, you might chose to do their family instead of a biological parent.

17. HOMEWORK Yes, you have homework on the first day back from break…… Talk to your family!!! Find out about your history! Become a genealogist! Create a “rough draft” of your family tree. I will only check them for completion; this is NOT your final project grade. We will be working on these projects the rest of the week, but you need something to build off of, so do some research tonight! On Friday, we will be working on the project in class, and you NEED to have a poster with you!

18. BELLWORK – family tree Get out your family tree rough draft, I will come around to check for points. Why is it important to know about your family’s history? What did you learn about your family’s history from your homework assignment? What do you still need to do to complete your family tree? THINKER: What is the purpose of a “New Year’s Resolution?” Do you think they are effective? Why or why not?

19. Family Tree Project You are now going to start creating your own family tree project. It must take form of a poster, drawing, diagram, etc. Be creative! Turn this into some sort of picture, and include as much detail as needed. You will present these during the next class period. During the presentation, you will explain a couple members of your family and any important background or interesting facts – so be prepared! Everyone presents…..no matter what! Worth 40 points!!!
