2 Id – the most primitive component of personality that operates to satisfy sexual and aggressive desires. Ego – the component that must somehow balance desire, reality, and morality. Superego – the moral component that has knowledge of social standards and punishment. Structural Model of… They will inherently conflict

3 Topographic Model of… Conscious (Mental Processes) - thoughts that are at the center of awareness. Preconscious (Mental Processes) – thoughts that are not conscious but could be brought to one’s awareness at any point in time. Unconscious (Mental Processes) – thoughts, memories, and desires that are not consciously accessible.

5 Defense Mechanisms – unconscious mental processes aimed at protecting one’s self from unpleasant emotions and anxiety. There are 8 different types of defense mechanisms.

6 Projection – attributing one’s own unacknowledged feelings or impulses on others. Denial – refusing to acknowledge external realities or emotions. Repression – keeping thoughts or emotions out of awareness. Regression – reverting to modes of managing with conflicts or emotions in a manner characteristic of an earlier age.

7 Reaction Formation – turning one’s unacceptable feelings into their opposites. Sublimation – converting sexual or aggressive impulses into socially accepted activities. Rationalization – rationalizing ones actions in a way that avoids accepting uncomfortable feelings. Passive Aggression – the indirect expression of aggression to others. Quiz; Two Break-up
