5 So what happened to Good Ol’ John Brown? O October, 1859 O John Brown, after studying historical slave uprisings, and with backing from wealthy abolitionists, led a band of 21 white and black men to Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now W.V.) O Plan was to attack the federal arsenal there, distribute the weapons to blacks in the area and lead a slave uprising O He was captured and tried and hanged for high treason. O Many in the North expressed admiration for Brown and some even referred to him as a martyr for the sacred cause of freedom. O In the South there was an equal and opposite reaction. You can imagine how that went…
