Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu Web Services for Image Conversion and Document Database Search Dr. Vladimir Misic, James M. Kang, Jordan Sissel CS Department, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY 14623

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 2 Motivation Dissemination of the JPEG 2000 has been slow. There are few commercial plug-ins that enable users to create JPEG 2000 documents sporadic use not readily available to the average user. Users should be enabled to easily test the benefits of the new file format, and compare it to the well known ones (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, etc.)

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 3 Projects at the RIT 1.On-line image conversion service Improve dissemination 2.Annotation of J2K images Demonstrate archival advantages of JP2 family

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 4 On-line image conversion service Idea: Enable on-line image conversion to JPEG 2000 No JPEG 2000 plug-in or application needed to convert image Free plug-ins for browsers are available

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 5 On-line image conversion service browserserver image database user converter app. ANY IMAGE JP2 IMAGE

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 6 Annotation of J2K images Idea: Any region within the image can be annotated in XML format (using asoc, roid, and lbl boxes) Create complete set of tools to: Annotate JP2 images Upload JP2 images to server, automatically extract annotations from the image, parse that information, and transfer them to an Oracle database Tool to search JP2 Metadata information stored in database and return not only the info, but also the image (thumbnail and full version)

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 7 Annotation phase browserserver image database userJim extractor app. JPX/JP2 IMAGE annotation app.

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 8 Search phase browserserver image database userJim Search request JP2 IMAGE

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 9 Principle: Region Selection Any region of the image can be selected for annotation gray sky Porche car green bushes

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 10 Principle: Annotation Creation Currently the following data is stored for each region User Name Description Current Date Coordinates (x, y, width, height) Any additional form of metadata can be added

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 11 Annotation Creation Example Coordinate Information New Box “jimk” Current Date Image Region Description Author

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 12 XML Format Annotations are stored in a new box called “jimk” in XML Format

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 13 Client Interface Client interface supports: Ability to upload JP2 images using a web interface and automatically extract XML information into an Oracle Database As a result: JP2 Images are searchable based on their embedded metadata information

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 14 Demo Annotation Creation Upload and Search Features

Vladimir Misic vm@cs.rit.edu 15 Issues Plug in Server Annotation standardization (tags) JPX vs. JP2
