2. What is fact fluency? By fact fluency, we mean knowing a math fact with automaticity. How fast?-- is often the question. According to Fast Math by Scholastic, students should know it within.8 of a second. I have read elsewhere that 3 seconds is recommended by Common Core. Very much like students know their sight words without thinking about them...that is how we want students to know their math facts.

Rather than recreating 8 x 6 in their mind and using a strategy every single time they see this fact, students must have fact fluency.

4. Where does fact fluency begin? The FIRST step to fact fluency is having a strong conceptual understanding of the fact strategies (doubles, doubles + 1, using combinations of 10, etc).

5. What is expected of my child? Grade Required Fluency Expectations According to Common Core K Add and subtract within five 1 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. 2 Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. Add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 3 Multiply and divide within 100. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. Add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers 5 Multiply multi-digit whole numbers

6. What can I do to help my child become a more fluent mathematician?
