“The History of Astronomy” By, Amanda Segro

Ancient Astronomers

Ancient Astronomers! The first documented human research started in the Middle East with the Arabs and some what in China too This was the time period of the 8 th and 15 th century The spread of the astronomy research went into Grease shortly after

The Tools that they used! The ancient astronomers didn’t have any fancy space equipment all of the tools that they really had were their “eyes”

Theories from the church! During the first centuries the churches opinion played a big role in the every day life When the Arabs had their discovery on the stars and space out there. The church had their own opinion on what was out there, like the sky at night was a black blanket and the stars were the wholes in the sheet. And the earth was the center of the universe

Nicholas Copernicus

He was a Renaissance astronomer Born in 1473, Deceased in 1543 He was the first person to formulate a comprehensive “Heliocentric Cosmology” Heliocentric Cosmology- is the placing the earth not at the center of the universe, and the explanation of why the earth was placed where it was His work is known as the “Copernican Revolution” His work was the basses of other known astronomers to start their work

Galileo Galilei

“Galileo, Galileo!!!” He was a Italian physicist, Mathematics, astronomer & philosopher Born in 1564, Deceased in 1642 Galileo improved the telescope and the conquest for astronomical observations and improving the “Copernicans theory”. He also improved the military compass and other technologies of the days During his investigations with the improved telescope he made sight of Venus and 4 of the largest satellites of Jupiter, which he then named “Galileo’s Moon”. He also made observations of sunspots His nick names:" The father of modern observational astronomy/ modern physics/ and modern science”

Johannes Kepler

“Johannes Kepler” He was a German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Born in 1571, Deceased in 1630 The time period the he lived in there wasn’t a distinct difference between astronomy and astrology He was a key figure in the 17 th century, for his study of the scientific revolution

Sir Isaac Newton

“Sir Isaac Newton” He was a English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher alchemist, and theologian Born in 1642, Deceased in 1727 He wrote books describing the ground rules for most of the classical mechanics In his books he describes the three laws of motion which has dominated the scientific views of the physical universe for the next three centuries Newton built the first reflecting telescope and developed a theory of the colour based on the observation of a prism

If you notice all of these astronomers based their work off of earlier astronomers work. Each study started where the other left off at. Its almost like one long large study of each persons topic. What would have happened if the ancient Arabs chose to believe what the church was saying about the sky, where would our modern astronomy science be now? No one can answer that because each on of these people had imagination behind their work.

“The End!!!”
