3.  Explain what is contained in the Windows XP registry.  Use the Regedit to explore the contents of the registry.  Describe the contents of the five registry Keys used in Windows XP.  Backup a computer’s registry using Export.  Restore a computer’s registry using Import.

5. The Registry is a Database that Contains Windows XP’s... Hardware Settings Object Properties O/S Settings Application Options

6. 6 Warning! The registry is the data base Windows XP uses to keep track of the configuration. Improper use of the registry can render Windows XP useless! Incorrect registry settings can prevent the computer from booting!

7. 7 Rules for making registry changes. Should be done only by those who know what they are doing. To be used only for those changes that can be made only through the registry. All other changes should be made through the various Windows XP Utilities such as through the Control Panel.

8. 8 Best Practices Before making changes to the registry, make a backup copy. Do not replace the registry with that from another machine. Do not attempt to edit the registry with any tool other than the registry Editor. Do not leave the Registry Editor running unattended.

9. 9 One Last Warning! Mistyping just one single line can cause you computer not to boot up the next time you try.

12. 12 The registry contain Five Keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT HKEY_CURRENT_USER HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIGURATION

13. 13 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Allows Windows Explorer to associate file types with applications. Data that associates file types with programs or Applications. Configuration data for COM objects, Visual Basic programs, automation, and scripting).

14. 14 HKEY_CURRENT_USER Contains configuration information for the user who is currently logged on to the computer. It is a sub-key or sub-tree of HKEY_USERS.

15. 15 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Hardware Configuration Information. Such as bus type, system memory, device drivers, etc.

16. 16 HKEY_USERS Contains configuration information for all users of the computer. HKEY_CURRENT_USER is one of its sub-keys or sub-trees

22. 22 Backing up the registry Select the key that contains the value that you want to edit. In the File menu, select Export. In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file, Type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.
