3 1. Introduce (v): to tell someone another person’s name the first time that they meet. Word Formation : introduction (n) Definition :the action of telling someone another person's name the first time that they meet Collocations : introduce someone to someone Ex: I'd like to introduce my younger son, Steve. 4 2. Nickname (n): an informal name for someone or something, especially a name which your friends or family call, usually based on your proper name or your character. Collocations : to call sb by his/her nickname give a nickname to sb Ex: They always use the nickname Beth for their daughter Elizabeth. Ex: Jack’s nickname was lefty, because he was left-handed. Nationality (n): the official right to belong to a particular country Word Formation : 1. nation (n) Definition : a country, thought of as a large group of people living in one area with their own government, language, traditions, etc Word Formation : 2. nationless (adj) Definition : someone who doesn’t have a nationality. Ex: What nationality are you? Ex: You can see people of many nationalities in London. Ex: The Germans, as a nation, are generally well organized. 7 5. Birthplace (n): the house, town, etc. where a person was born Synonyms : father land, mother land, place of origin Ex: Ally is from Canada, but her birthplace is Tokyo. 9 8. Computer programmer (n): a person whose job is to produce computer programs Word Formation : Computer programming (n) Definition : the activity or job of writing programs for computers. Ex: He works as a computer programmer in a company with a very high salary. Ex: To become a computer programmer, you should have advanced programming knowledge. Graphic designer (n): someone who works in graphic design Word Formation : Graphic design (n) Definition : the art of designing pictures and text for books, magazines, advertising, etc. Ex: As expected, they could not finish the project on time.
