The Body Power

What is power? Power is the combination of speed and strength Power is moving something heavy, quickly.

Power For example – Javelin. Power is required in the shoulders in order to throw the javelin as far as possible. The winner is the person who can apply the biggest force quickest.

Power There are many benefits to performance of high levels of power. Strong levels of power will help to perform effectively across a range of skills i.e. throwing, hitting, jumping and kicking.

Power If you lack the necessary levels of power then your performance will be effected.

Power For example – in football you may have to execute a long pass to a team-mate. If you cant do this, then your team could lose possession of the ball.

Power How do you test power? 1) The Standing Broad Jump 2) The Vertical Jump Test

Power The Standing Broad Jump

Power Stand with your feet at the end of the measuring mat. Swing arms back and jump forward as far as you can landing balanced on two feet and take your measurement Use the longest measurement from 3 attempts.

Power The Vertical Jump Test

Power Stand feet together beside a wall. Reach up with your arm and mark the wall at full extension. Then jump as high as you can marking the wall at the top of the jump. Measure the difference between the two marks.

Power Before you can begin to develop power you must decide which specific area of the body you want to improve.

Power For example – Shoulders for a shot putt in athletics.

Power Why measure initial levels of power? To know the correct level to start at and so that you can set realistic targets for yourself.

Power One way to train for power would be weight training. However it is important that the muscle groups that you improve are specific to the activity you are doing.

Power You can also do exercises that mimic actions in you chosen activity.

Power E.g. Basketball – using a weighted medicine ball to practice different types of passing. Increasing the weight of the object to be moved quickly will increase power in the working muscles.

Power To do weight training for power is very similar to that of training for strength. You would use; High weight Low repetitions But, you would perform the reps EXPLOSIVELY (quickly)
